How the Strategist Trend Score works

STS

STS is built in-house at Strategist. It is a continuous rating — not a headcount of bullish indicators — and it is expressed in volatility units so a quiet currency and a wild commodity can be compared on the same scale.

STS = Direction × Conviction

Direction answers which way the market is going (-100 to +100). Conviction answers how much of the evidence agrees (0 to 100). A trend only scores highly when both are strong.

The four pillars

Structure32%

Where price sits against its 20 / 50 / 200-period averages, measured in ATR units, plus the slope of the 50-period average.

Momentum26%

Speed of the move: MACD histogram plus 14- and 60-bar returns, each divided by expected volatility over that horizon.

Persistence22%

Whether the move is directional or chop: DI+ vs DI- bias and the share of the last 20 bars that closed higher.

Confirmation20%

How far RSI, Stochastic %K, CCI and Williams %R sit from their neutral levels — continuous, so 61 and 95 are not the same.

Conviction

62% agreement between the four pillars, 38% ADX trend strength. Disagreeing pillars drag conviction down even when the average looks directional.

Reading the number

Power Downtrend−100 … −60
Downtrend−60 … −30
Bearish Tilt−30 … −10
Chop−10 … +10
Bullish Tilt+10 … +30
Uptrend+30 … +60
Power Uptrend+60 … +100

On the trend map the shaded corners are STS beyond ±30 with conviction above 55 — a clear direction backed by agreeing evidence. Below that line the move is either weak or unconfirmed.

Risk note

Every input to STS is a lagging function of price. A strong reading can reverse without warning. Use position sizing and stops; do not trade the score on its own.

Computed from OHLC history supplied by Yahoo Finance for the timeframe you select. Intraday coverage is thinner than daily, so fewer markets appear on H1 / H4.

STS describes the recent price path. It is not a forecast, not a backtest, and not investment advice.
